MaintainIT

The new mould-maintenance system for LEGO factories worldwide.

My role & context

At the LEGO Group, I designed MaintainIT. The new mould maintenance system for factories producing LEGO bricks around the world.

I worked across analysis of the existing system, field research, prototyping, usability testing and ready-to-build UI, collaborating closely with UX designers, developers, product owners and IT consultants.

Research

To understand the work in context, we spent full days in the Billund factory observing maintenance teams and speaking with them during real tasks. This gave us a shared understanding of the workflow, its constraints and the principles that should guide the new system.

Through repeated low-fidelity prototypes and regular user feedback, we explored how to balance two competing needs: showing enough operational information at a glance while keeping complex workflows manageable.

Design

After several months, we delivered a ready-to-build design covering most of the new system’s core workflows. Development had begun before I left the LEGO Group.

Mobile workflow

The mobile experience helped technicians access and update maintenance tickets while working on the factory floor, away from a workstation.
